Paul Mitchelmore, Head Upholsterer
Paul is one of the longest-serving members of the team, having started work with us in 1981 when Kingcome Sofas was based in the historic mill town of Buckfastleigh.
Overseeing the upholstery team, Paul sees our sofas and chairs through to completion; final checking for quality.
The frame is built and the fabric cut and sewn before coming to Paul and his team of 9 upholsterers. They are responsible for building up the frame, and for the fabric placement and pattern matching, an intricate and technical part of the process.
Paul and his team work with every choice imaginable from leather through to velvets; plain to striped or patterned. Many fabrics can be complex to use – not to mention hugely expensive – and again Pauls depth of experience is greatly beneficial in this area.
Paul’s many years of experience mean his knowledge of upholstery techniques is second to none. He passes on this knowledge while training new upholstery staff, enabling others in the department to develop their skills. Paul is also the ‘go to’ person for other departments, in particular working closely with the frame shop, cushion makers and fabric cutters.
Paul personally works on one-off, first prototype pieces of furniture, as well as on complex bespoke designs; being the part of his role he enjoys most. “Seeing the idea, making the whole thing work – that’s the most satisfying and rewarding thing – knowing this is the only one there’ll ever be.”
